  • The Greek word Eucharist means “Thanksgiving.”

  • Christian Eucharist has its origins in the Jewish Passover meal which Jesus celebrated with his disciples before he died and directed them to “do this in remembrance” of him.

  • At this meal, Jesus identified himself with the bread and wine (Saying over the bread, “This is my body given for you” and over the wine, “This is the cup of my blood which will be shed for many for the forgiveness of sins.”)

  • The Apostles and the early churches they founded understood his action at that Passover meal as establishing a new Covenant in the blood of Christ for the redemption of all.

  • The Eucharist became an act of remembrance (anamnesis) of what Christ had done.  By participating in this anamnesis the members of the Church become one communion “with Christ” and “in Christ,” and by the power of the Holy Spirit they offer themselves with him to his Father, as they both anticipate and proclaim that Christ will come at the end of time to raise from the dead all who share this communion in Lord’s crucified and risen Body and Blood.

  • Therefore, the Eucharist is the “source and summit” of the entire Christian life.  From the Eucharist flows all the love and care of neighbor and of the world to which Christians are called in imitation of Christ.  All the members of the Church are obliged to participate in the Eucharist each Sunday in remembrance of Christ’s death and resurrection in which they share sacramentally, offering to God in Christ their lives and the whole world for its salvation.
